Bench Modular Seating Creates Striking Centrepiece for Wembley Park

Bench seating has been installed into Wembley Park, London, to create a striking sculptural centrepiece for their 'Market Square'.

"Bench seating was just what I was looking for"

Set with the task of creating an inspirational space to reflect Wembley Park's unique character, John McHugh, founder of John McHugh Design, carefully considered how best to go about this.

"I was looking for something very sculptural and was searching online for the ideal solution. I came across the GeoMet range and to me it was just what I was looking for.

The seats were 'stand out', simple' and 'functional'. I specified the Bench seating in orange which happened to be bang on for my client, since unknown to me at the time this was going to be their new corporate brand colour for Wembley Park.

The site is owned and developed by Quintain; which is part of a £3 billion regeneration project where the landscape brings together: residential, entertainment, retail and leisure areas, so I needed to create something that was flexible, fresh and relevant to the environment that would connect all three elements."

Modular and multifunctional

Creating the ideal seating for somewhere as vibrant and distinctive as Wembley Park was no easy task. John McHugh, head of design, explains:

"Julian Tollast - Head of Masterplanning and Design at Quintain wanted something very different for the urban landscape, that's why I was brought in to help realise his overall vision for Wembley Park.

My background is in TV as a Production Designer, though my creative abilities and skillset have afforded me opportunities to work across many other areas including corporate, so fortunately this experience lent itself perfectly to Julian wanting to think outside of the box.

Together with Mike Dodd - Development Manager, James Huartson - Estates Services Manager and his team, we set about how best to realise this project and to add a touch of drama to the design it was decided to make the seating multi-use.

The team at GeoMet were very open to reimagining the Bench seating which involved being able to create a 'W' and 'P' for Wembley Park and a series of 'L' shaped benches were manufactured without the need to be fixed down permanently so that each unit could be re-modulated.

The majority of the time the Benches sit around green spaces in Market Square to give the community somewhere to rest or enjoy lunch from the adjacent Food Market, whilst also adding a striking centrepiece to the urban landscape.

However, when required the units can of course be easily moved to areas around Wembley Park for alternative uses such as temporary events.

The design has worked perfectly and my client Quintain are incredibly pleased with the end result."

Wembley Park - London's New Creative District

Wembley Park is situated just a stone's throw from the world-famous Wembley Stadium and is fast becoming known as 'London's new creative district.'

The park includes London Designer Outlet which hosts 70 brands offering up to 70% discounts; the centre also offers over 20 restaurants and a wide selection of bars. There's also designer living on offer in new 'Tipi' rental apartments where utilities and superfast broadband are included in the rent.

Wembley Park also has a very creative vibe and launched a Wembley Park Street Art Project with Mr Doodle and other international street artists to doodle works of art. The spectacular installation covers 7 pillars and 12 cinder blocks, making a total of nearly of 43 million square inches of doodling!

Soon a new Boxpark will open in Wembley Park set to welcome over 30 independent and up and coming food and drinks traders and a 2000 capacity events space.

Wembley Park will also welcome a new flexible 1,000-2,000 seat theatre which will be run by Troubadour Theatres. The new venue will be located inside the former Fountain Studios, once home to numerous TV Shows including the X Factor. This exciting venture will offer a range of bold and ambitious shows plus a modern state of the art restaurant and a fun, sociable bar space.
