The client
One of our clients is a leading premium snack manufacturer, known for producing upmarket potato snacks made from the finest ingredients. Operating at this level of quality and scale requires the use of large volumes of cooking oil within their production process. To manage this safely and efficiently, the company relies on robust oil storage systems that must meet strict environmental and safety standards.
At the heart of their setup is a bunded oil storage area designed to contain and control any potential spills or leaks. The tank bund, measuring approximately 9 metres by 8 metres and over a metre high, plays a crucial role in safeguarding both the site and the environment. Over time, however, the bund’s original surface had begun to deteriorate, risking its integrity and compliance. The client required a durable, long-term solution to fully encapsulate and seal the area — ensuring it remained watertight, oil-tight, and chemically resistant for many years to come.
The problem – a leaking bund
Despite their high production standards, the company was facing a serious issue: the bund surrounding their oil storage tanks had developed leaks. If left unresolved, any significant escape of sunflower or rapeseed oil could have led to major safety and environmental problems, not to mention costly downtime in production.
The client reached out to Sui Generis for support, asking if we could restore their bund to a fully oil-tight condition. Their goal was simple — they wanted peace of mind, knowing their containment system was completely secure so they could focus on what they do best: making exceptional snacks.
On inspection, our team found that rapeseed oil had already leaked into the bund, contaminating parts of the concrete surface. To ensure a long-lasting repair, we first carried out a deep clean using specialised caustic cleaning agents to break down and remove all oil residues. Once the surface was completely decontaminated, we performed grit blasting to remove remaining impurities and create a textured key, ready for the fibreglass matting and resin application that would follow.
The solution – a fibreglass lining
The client’s bund, measuring 9 metres by 8 metres and over a metre high, required a durable and permanent fix that would fully restore its structural integrity and containment performance. After assessing the condition and long-term requirements of the site, our team recommended a Glass Reinforced Polymer (GRP) bund lining system — the most reliable and cost-effective method for achieving a completely sealed and maintenance-free surface.
GRP, also known as fibreglass, offers exceptional strength, flexibility, and chemical resistance, making it ideal for bunded containment areas that store oils, fuels, or other industrial liquids. Unlike traditional coatings or paints, which can crack, peel, or degrade over time, a GRP lining creates a continuous, reinforced membrane that bonds permanently to the substrate. With a lifespan of 20 years or more, it delivers long-term protection and peace of mind for the client.
Once preparation and cleaning were complete, our installation team applied multiple layers of fibreglass matting and resin across the entire bund, ensuring seamless coverage of all walls, floors, gullies, and joints. After curing, the surface was finished with a high-performance topcoat, creating a smooth, oil-tight, and watertight finish that is both durable and easy to maintain. The completed GRP lining now provides a fully encapsulated containment system, guaranteeing that any potential spillages of sunflower or rapeseed oil will remain safely contained within the bund.
Extra quick bund repair
Time was a critical factor on this project. The client needed a fast and effective repair that wouldn’t interrupt their production schedule — shutting down operations simply wasn’t an option. Thanks to careful planning, efficient on-site coordination, and our experienced installation team, we were able to complete the full GRP bund lining in under a week, without causing any disruption to the company’s day-to-day activities.
Our team worked systematically, ensuring each stage of preparation, application, and curing was completed to the highest standard while adhering to the client’s strict safety and hygiene requirements. The result was a seamless GRP lining that delivered immediate containment integrity and long-term protection against oil ingress and chemical exposure.
Now that the work is complete, the client can focus entirely on their core business — producing great-tasting snacks — with full confidence that their storage infrastructure is safe, compliant, and built to last. With a design life of over two decades, this newly lined bund will continue to perform for many years, providing durable, low-maintenance protection for their rapeseed oil storage tanks.
