Case Study: GRP Riser Housing Units

June 2008 saw the completion of the £60 million state-of-the-art blood centre in Filton Bristol.

The centre is the largest blood-processing centre in the world and prior to its opening, Sui Generis operatives could be observed on the centre’s roof installing 13 bespoke GRP service riser housing units that had been manufactured in our factory in Colchester.

Our involvement in the project begun some months earlier when we were approached by a major contractor who were looking for a suitable company to manufacture, deliver and install the GRP units.

After assuring our client that we could manufacture the units to conform to their specific safety and design requirements production commenced and within a matter of weeks the units, complete with access hatches and opening panels, were despatched to Bristol.

Bespoke GRP fibreglass plant room with ventilation

Due to the size and ventilation requirements of the plant that was to be installed in the unit, our client’s requirements were very specific.

The unit was to include double doors with stainless steel hinges, a compression latch, louver vents and a plywood core sandwich between the layers of fibreglass to provide structural strength and easy fixing points.

Plant room floor anti-slip grating

Additionally, with safety in mind, the floor was made up of our very own slip resistant covered grating.

From manufacture to delivery, complete service

Following receipt of our client’s instructions to proceed with the manufacture, production began and within four weeks the unit was ready for despatch.

As the completed unit measured some 8m x 3m x 3m specialist lifting equipment was required to load the unit in order that it could be transported from our premises in Colchester to its resting place in Devon.
