Chester Zoo are at the forefront of helping to breed endangered bird species

With some bird numbers in the wild critically low, Chester Zoo are working alongside conservation breeding centres, establishing viable zoo populations of endangered birds and developing strategies for their survival and reintroduction in the wild. Sui Generis were called to install GRP linings to new building developments at Chester Zoo.

Conservation breeding building development project

Sui Generis were called to install GRP linings to new building developments at the zoo, working alongside building contractors to help complete the project on time.

Wall and floor linings were installed to two newly built large and small aviary buildings.

These had completed concrete floors that needed protecting. Sui Generis were able to achieve a good finish to the wall floor joints with no overspill that could damage the floors concrete finish.

Each of the small and large aviaries consisted of 18 avian pens at circa 4000mm square.

During the project additional linings were installed to bio security rooms.

After successfull completion, Sui Generis returned to add linings to walls and floors of a second phase of the project, working on a building to house Storks, Cranes and Ibis, consisting of 12 pens 7500 x 4000 x 3000mm high.

Specific Requirements for Wall and Floors

A Sui Generis lining provides the solution of a specific requirement to eradicate the use of mastic sealants within aviaries where inquisitive birds could peck and play.

The use of GRP gives a full continuous lining, with no joins. The seamless areas now resistant to penetration by sharp claws and beaks.

GRP Linings were chosen to seal and protect the concrete walls and floors, now suitable for regular washing down and cleaning of surfaces, which limits the ability of disease to occur creating a much safer environment for the birds, for many years to come.

Protected with Biomaster

We partnered with Addmaster on this project in particular as their ‘Biomaster’ product, used as an additive within the gel topcoat of our products, guarantees fast, effective antimicrobial protection for their lifetime, helping to keep surfaces clean and hygienic, reducing the risk of cross-contamination.

We can incorporate the anti-bacterial top coat within all of our GRP products, including industrial coatings, wall, floor or tank linings and furniture or workstations – proactively preventing and disrupting the growth of bacteria on treated surfaces.
