Case Study: GRP Chimney Replicas
GRP is now widely recognised, by architects and building contractors, as a viable alternative to traditional building materials such as concrete, stone and ceramic for a number of applications. These uses range from building fascia’s, cornices, keystones, guttering, chimney pots, turrets and even planters.
Victorian building conversion
Testimony to the above is a recent project we undertook in conjunction with one of our clients who were tasked with the conversion of four individual Victorian buildings.
Whilst the buildings were to be transformed into modern commercial office space and luxury residential properties it was essential that the traditional exterior appearance of the buildings were preserved.
Part of the renovation involved the replacement of some of the existing Victorian style chimneys.
GRP Victorian style chimneys
Our client approached us to see if it was possible to create a dummy chimney in GRP that would be both lightweight and maintenance free but could also replicate the Victorian style appearance of the remaining chimneys.
We set about the task with relish and a few months later the chimneys were adorning the London skyline. With their block work style textured finish, the GRP chimneys blended in effortlessly with their neighbouring counterparts.
To preserve their appearance the external surfaces of the chimneys were created with a UV stable gel coat with a light fastness of 7+ and we are confident that they will sit proudly alongside the original chimneys for many years to come.
