Fibreglass Bund Lining, Bund Refurbishments and Bund Upgrades

With increasing emphasis on conforming to environmental legislation and targets many companies are benefi ting from our range of spill containment solutions one of which is our fi breglass bund lining system.

Pollution Prevention Guidelines insist that bunds must now be in good repair, of adequate size and completely water tight. A Fibreglass Bund Lining satisfies these requirements and much more. For instance it can withstand chemical attack, is able to cope with normal structural movement, is impact resistant, seamless and will be maintenance free for up to 20 years. Most projects are completed within a week so down time and inconvenience is minimal leaving a bund with a seamless seal providing a secure environment in which to situate tanks or other containers.

A typical bund is prepared by grit blasting the surfaces and carrying out repairs or upgrades. Then using a resin specifi ed for the particular storage requirements of the bund our highly skilled operatives apply the lining to the existing or newly extended walls and fl oor at a fraction of the cost of a total rebuild. This is not to be confused with a paint system that will certainly be cheaper but only provides a short term and very limited alternative.

Typical Bund Lining Scenarios

Featured in the accompanying photographs are some problems that we encounter on a regular basis. Picture 1 shows where a tank has been removed and exposed a floor that will certainly not contain a spill. Often bunds are subjected to modifi cation that leave their integrity wanting.

Picture 2 (right) shows a damaged wall. The danger and failing is obvious.

Picture 3 (right) shows a pipe exiting through the bund wall, an unacceptable practice. However it is worthy of note that the Environment Agency will accept this type of situation if the application of a seal offers substantial protection. Sui Generis can achieve this effectively, especially when applying a glass reinforced lining system.

Picture 4 (right) highlights how successful oil contamination can be, namely to the point of 100% penetration. Many bunds are utilising the wall of a building and such contamination is obviously unacceptable. Today each bund must have its own walls. However Sui Generis has the perfect solution for old bunds which utilise walls of a building and where excessive contamination is a problem.

Safe secondary spill containment - A bund built within a bund

Protecting the environment by securing a bund with an internal glass reinforced resin system is more than applying a lining. Because the resin is reinforced with chop strand fi breglass mat, it becomes an insituation moulded and shaped one piece plastic sheet. Depending on the specification this will range from 2mm thick to perhaps 6mm thick. The end result is that we create a new bund lining, built within the old, which not only has its own structural strength but when desired forms a perfect bond to the existing substrate. The advantages and benefi ts over a paint system are immediately obvious.

• Case Study

Edmonton Power Station - Lining to Chemical Bunds

The chemical environments were 36% Hydrochloric acid and 98% Sulphuric Acid. Both bunds were of insuffi cient capacity and unable to contain liquid. Each bund was dried and gritblasted to ensure adhesion to the substrate. Concrete blocks were set over steel starter bars to increase capacity. Redundant pipes, ducting and fi ttings were removed. A service hatch was incorporated into one of the walls for accessing pipes and pumps. The entire internal substrate was treated with a Novalac Vinylester Reinforced Resin System that will offer decades of protection.
