Acetone Banished From Our Worksites
A product can be used successfully over a long period of time without mishap but it's not until an assessment is made that its potential for disaster is fully realised.
A case in point is Acetone.
In the GRP industry the product is used for cleaning tools e.g. rollers and brushes as well as surfaces where resin has been smeared or spilt. When we carried out a full COSHH assessment on Acetone we were reminded of what a very dangerous substance it is to have on our premises or take to our client’s sites.
In essence it is a highly flammable irritant which forms explosive mixtures with air with a flashpoint of –18ºC. Acetone can also have a narcotic effect by acting as a central nervous system depressant on users.
Could it be replaced with a less dangerous alternative? We tried various solutions but invariably they were cost prohibitive. However, eventually we trialled a water based cleaning agent that, with the right equipment, works very well. It's simple to store as opposed to the explosion proof cabinet needed for acetone. Plus we have eliminated the very high risk of fire when working on site that is unavoidably associated with Acetone, a highly flammable substance.
As with many aspects of our industry we pride ourselves in being at the forefront of changes which improve the health & safety of not only our operatives but also those around our working area.
So next time we come to your site rest assured the potential fire or risk of explosion has been greatly reduced.
