Fibreglass Tank Lining

A tank within a tank

Installing a GRP tank lining is a very cost effective alternative to replacement. In many cases a capital saving of as much as 80% of the cost of replacement can be made. Subject to lining specification, the life expectancy of a steel vessel can be extended at least 20 years beyond its normal service expectation. Glass Reinforced plastic is the material of the 21st century. It is economical, versatile and hardwearing. It can be combined with different resins and additives to offer a chemical resistance for most storage environments. As this particular lining creates, in effect, “a tank within a tank”, it provides qualities such as a stable structure with high strength to weight ratio and excellent impact resistance. GRP can be the answer to damaged or leaking tanks of any material ranging from concrete, steel or polypropylene.

Tank Linings

It’s a fact of life that steel corrodes. The problems caused by rust are many and include contamination of content, escape of content, pollution problems, unsightly structure and risks to health and safety.

With swift action the cost of refurbishment works can be minimised and the necessity for replacement avoided.

Sui Generis have a range of products and services that can put most wrongs right quickly, efficiently and cost effectively. As will be seen from other pages on this website we are probably the most versatile company in the world when it comes to surface preparation. Therefore no matter the surface problem, the structure material or the standard required, we can deal with it.

Our repair systems range from epoxy compounds, polyester pastes through to glass reinforced resins. We can repair from either inside the vessel or outside and if necessary, as in the case of the corroded tank lid pictured, we can replace.

Our coating and lining systems have been carefully developed and chosen to ensure future longevity of refurbished tanks. And we offer an on-site technical survey to assess any problem and specify the most suitable system with due consideration to available budgets.

Sectional Water Tanks - Internally Refurbished

The principal causes of failure with sectional tanks, in our experience, are corrosion and joint/bracing failure. Failure is usually speeded up on the joints if the vessel is subject to cycling. With age, structural movement increases and joints fail, especially behind the bar bracing panels. Leaks occur which get behind the external paint and cause oxidation. Further, tie bars can become ineffective and internal rust can cause contamination.

Process Water Tanks

Process water tanks come in all shapes and sizes, operate at various temperatures and are necessary across many areas of liningry. Most are made in mild steel and are subject to cycling. Corrosion and wear are responsible for most problems. We have a lining system to solve them all.

Potable Water Tank Lining

Only materials with Water Research Council approval (or similar certification) should be used when lining a potable water tank. Overflows and vents should be screened using fine stainless steel mesh to eliminate foreign bodies (alive or otherwise) from contaminating the water. Manways and lids should be sealed for the same purpose. Sui Generis are also able to insulate the vessel internally and then fully encapsulate which ensures longevity of service life.

Liquor Tank

The brewery liquor tank is situated at the heart of the Charles Wells brewery. The vessel is of corrugated steel construction and measures 10.6 x 9.6 x 3.9 metres high. The condition had deteriorated to the point where the product was at risk of contamination. Sui Generis blast cleaned back to white metal prior to applying a seamless, one piece glass reinforced resin lining. The system was sealed with a resin rich flow coat. The photographs show work in progress and the finished application.

Effluent Tanks

Effluent normally includes a cocktail of chemicals often with a wide pH swing and sometimes operates at temperature. Armed with sufficient environment detail our chemists are able to specify the most suitable and economical lining system.

Water Treatment Tanks

Untreated sewage water was seeping to ground due to structural failure especially at wall/floor joints. The client reported that the structure was quite ‘live’ and any system adopted to seal the facility and protect the environment would have to cope with the structural movement. Sui Generis specified a Scott-Bader isophthalic polyester resin, reinforced with glass fibre chopped strand matting. The system was designed and applied with due consideration to the environment and potential movement.

Chemical Storage Tanks

The four Sodium Hypochlorite tanks were ten years old and their warranty had just expired. They had been manufactured using an isophthalic resin, not the best specification for the environment. As a consequence chemical attack had occurred to the internal resin surface causing wall thinning. To remedy the problem all internal surfaces were grit blasted to create a suitable surface for the application of a substantial GRP lining using a Derakane vinyl ester resin
