GRP Covers at Arla Foods

As seen from the photograph (top right) steel covers are prone to corrosion and eventual failure. Such attacks generally occur simultaneously from inside and out. The external surfaces are subject to the weather conditions and the internal surfaces to the tank storage environment. Condensation and fuming can result in oxydization and/or chemical attack. Along with such circumstances comes a weakening of the structure thus a health and safety issue. This is not so with a GRP cover. The appropriate resin for the chemical environment is specified and a GRP structural engineer allows for wind and snow loadings etc. GRP roof installation has an indefinite life expectancy and has virtually no design limitations. The Arla Foods covers were made in sections, were fully insulated (encapsulated p.u. foam) and came complete with all fittings as per the client’s instructions. Assembly took place at ground level, then the completed item was craned into position and fixed.

Multi-Purpose GRP Cover

Multi-Purpose GRP Cover

The photograph above features a cover nearing the end of its installation period. The cover had two principal purposes: to keep rainwater and debris out, thus protecting the equipment in the pit and for safety reasons, to prevent personnel from falling in. A manway access was installed on the far side.

GRP Hoist Covers - Clark Chapman

Sixteen GRP hoist covers, complete with furniture, were manufactured for a Rolls Royce subsidiary called Clark Chapman. Some two years later one of our Directors, Mark Stone, was in Spain with a view to inspecting a tank for refurbishment on board a boat. He arrived in plenty of time for his appointment so decided to have a wander around Barcelona Harbour. Much to his surprise he noticed the hoist covers and fortunately had a camera with him to take the photograph below.
