Line Catchment Bunds for Rolls Royce Production

Rolls Royce is synonymous with top-class service and manufacturing. That’s why they chose Sui Generis to create new bunding at their production plant in Sunderland.Health and safety is also of paramount importance to Rolls Royce and their facilities management company. Mitie, recommended that production line catchment bunds be manufactured and installed on site to ensure any oil spillages from the machines were contained; a major cause of slips and falls.

Mitie’s Representative oversaw the installation, and was delighted with the high standard of workmanship. He says:

Sui Generis prepared the existing surface and installed a termination groove to the floor. One of our clients makes upmarket potato snacks from high quality ingredients – and it needs to use lots of oil to make its products on a large enough scale. The only problem was that the company had a leaking bund, which would have caused major problems if sunflower oil or rapeseed oil had emptied into it.

The solution – a fibreglass lining
The clients’ bund is 9 metres by 8 metres, and over a metre high. A long lasting solution was needed, so we recommended a fibreglass bund lining.

Hundreds of road tankers roll up to off-load their chemicals at Univar’s Northamptonshire site, and over the years small seepages of acids and caustics has resulted in the main wash-down area being eroded. Sui Generis’s team of fibreglass experts have fibreglass lined the entire wash-down area ensuring the safe delivery of chemicals to and from the site.

The grouting around the quarry tiles was failing, and could have led to roof leakages on their factory floor below. Silver Spring’s Representative, was quick to look for a solution. He says:

“The syrup room is 400m² and contains 18 tanks. We needed an expert team to come in; undertake minor repairs, prepare the existing quarry floor for lining, line the floor, and work around the tanks, all in just five days! We’ve just created a bespoke solution for a customer with a specific spill containment requirement. They needed a tank bund with pallet or fork lift facility, to contain food spill that would be placed outside prior to removal by specialist waste contractors.

We supplied our standard SG101 bundstand with an added forklift facility, and designed and manufactured a bespoke lid to cover it. The snug fitting fibreglass top will protect against contamination, insects and wildlife.

The lid was reinforced by adding a cross shape rib, to ensure no sagging in heavy snow or rain, avoiding water ponding.

A safe chemical storage area required a spill containment bund. A range of standard built bunds and spill trays are available from Sui Generis but the sports and leisure trust required a bespoke bund for their exact needs.

Our fibreglass experts designed and constructed a lightweight, one piece moulded fibreglass bund of sufficient volume to comply with the 110% regulations and an allowance for the day tank to sit within the bund itself. Added to this was a 38mm thick fibreglass grating platform to support the bulk storage tank containing 1400 litres of sodium hypochlorite (bleach).

Strength was important here and extra supports were added under the fibreglass grating, as well as to the shape of the bund. The completed fibreglass bund was then load tested in our Colchester factory to a load capacity of 1500 kilos allowing for the additional specific gravity of the bleach and the required design tolerances.

This was then delivered in one piece for easy installation.

The basin was going to have a change of use. Mark Stone, Contracts Manager, Sui Generis, explains the intricacies involved: “A cooling tower had sat on a large concrete basin structure. We needed to refurbish the basin so that it could be used to store post-filtered water from a reverse osmosis installation. The basin proved a tricky job as a number of buttresses were sticking out and re-bars too; we needed to cut out all metalworks and prepare an area for new pipework to be fitted.”

“Our team of experts grit blasted the concrete basin to strip it back to its original surface. They then applied a fibreglass lining followed by a post-cure to ensure maximum chemical resistance. The basin is now fit for purpose and will be in service for many years to come.”
